Coast Sealife and Watersports

Snorkelling

You can snorkel off the beach or at a number of nearby sites where there is plenty of coral and tropical coral fish.

Scuba Diving

If you are interested in Scuba diving, we work with the best Dive Centres in Diani and can arrange this for you. There are some excellent coral reef dive sites, including an interesting wreck, where you can see turtles, octopus, nudibranchs, anemones and a huge range of fish. You frequently see dolphins on your way out to the dive sites, which sometimes play by the boat as it travels along.

The Scuba centre we use also offers a full range of PADI courses and qualificaton, plus “try dives” for newcomers to the sport.

Deep Sea Fishing

There is deep sea fishing for marlin, sailfish and tuna at Shimoni, which can be arranged with some excellent and very experienced crews.

Other water sports

There are opportunities for jet skis, windsurfing and kite surfing at Diani, which we can arrange for you. This includes courses for those interested in tackling one of these sports for the first time.

Sea and bird life

For any interested naturalist, there are a wide range of places to explore. The intertidal lagoon between the beach and the fringing reef at low tide is full of life and worth exploring both at day and at night. Regular sightings include octopus, cuttle fish, tiger, lynx and gold ring cowries, nudibranchs, moray eels, crabs, snake eels, sea hares and varieties of sea urchin. A group of Marine Biologists stay each year, who are building up a guide to the underwater flora and fauna. There are a range of identification books at the house.

There are a mass of wading birds working the intertidal zone at low tide, including sacred ibis, the raucous haddeda ibis, egrets, herons, storks and many smaller birds, They are gradually pushed in toward the beach as the tide comes in, making it easy to get close to them. You may see pied kingfishers fishing at high tide too. In the garden, there are lilac breasted rollers, finches, wagtails and other small birds.
